This study aims to explore the lived experience of entrepreneurship among formerly incarcerated individuals in the city of Kermanshah and to understand the meaning of entrepreneurship in the process of rehabilitation and social reintegration. This study was conducted with a qualitative approach and using the phenomenological method. The participants consisted of 13 formerly incarcerated individuals who had established businesses in various economic sectors following their release. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step phenomenological method. The analysis led to the identification of eight main themes: individual empowering factors, structural and institutional support, existing barriers and constraints, reconstruction of social ties, consequences of entrepreneurship, deterrent factors preventing a return to crime, identity reconstruction and detachment from the past, and the sustainability and consolidation of the entrepreneurial pathway. The findings indicate that, in the lived experiences of formerly incarcerated individuals, entrepreneurship is not merely perceived as an economic activity; rather, it is experienced as a meaningful process that contributes to the reconstruction of personal identity, the restoration of self-worth, the redefinition of social status, and the strengthening of connections with society. The results further suggest that engagement in and persistence with entrepreneurship emerge through the interaction of individual, social, and institutional factors. In particular, family support, access to vocational and entrepreneurial training, availability of financial resources, and the reduction of social stigma play significant roles in facilitating this process. Overall, the findings demonstrate that entrepreneurship can function as an important pathway for personal rehabilitation and the facilitation of social reintegration among formerly incarcerated individuals. When appropriate supportive conditions are available, it may also contribute to reducing the likelihood of recidivism.
