Today, one can discern in de-constructive thought a persistent sensitivity to whatever becomes sedimented in the fixity of any center of identity, decision or law. Derrida is concerned with revealing the resentment and violence embedded in the foundation of modern thought, whether in the liberal or Marxist traditions. Through de-construction, however, he is by no means seeking a non-violent strategy. Rather, he seeks to demonstrate that the underlying sources of violence can always be weakened across different historical moments including the conditions of the present.
Shariati is a character shaped by his time. Accordingly, this article seeks on the one hand, to situate him within his historical context and, on the other, to demonstrate, through a reading of his thought, the possibility of distinguishing between an earlier and later Shariati. The article argues that, in both periods, his central concern has been liminal Iran as he has sought to move from a horizon of violence toward existential horizons of non-violence. By analyzing the logic of the aporias within the texts of these two periods, and by drawing on the existential dimensions of his later thought, it becomes possible to bring up a sustained sensitivity to the forms of violence emerging from contemporary unrests
