Abstract:
This sociological study employs a constructivist narrative analysis approach to examine the experience of separation in the lives of those left behind by migration in Afghanistan. Data were collected through narrative interviews with members of separated families, and the analysis involved coding the narratives, identifying key themes, and examining family and social discourses. The findings indicate that family separation is not merely an individual psychological experience but is profoundly shaped by social, cultural, and economic structures. The narratives are multilayered and polyphonic, reflecting concepts such as “suspended life” and “structural separation” that capture the complexity of being left behind. The study demonstrates that separation shapes individuals’ identities and daily lives while prompting diverse coping strategies to manage longing, responsibility, and meaning-making. By offering an innovative theoretical and methodological framework, this research provides a novel perspective on the lived realities of those left behind in Afghanistan.
